The first Singing Festival at Rozhen was organized in 1961

In 1961, was held the first Singing Festival at Rozhen.The three-day event in August is organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Directorate for Radio information and TV-Sofia, and the Administration and the Smolyan People’s Council.In the Festival participate more than 500 amateur artists – singers and instrumentalists, enthusiastically applauded by 80,000 people!
For folklorists and radio journalists Rozhen “1961” is a real hit -the whole Middle-Rhodopian area is presented. There are more than 1000 authentic songs played and recorded, new voices and master-players are discovered!
The oldest performer, 91-year-old StoyanDalygegov from the village of Chokmanovo, had 600 songs in his repertoire and the 13-year-old VelichkaZahmanova from the village of Progled knew 168 songs!
